Day 1: Embrace Nature at Arabuko Sokoke Forest and Gede Ruins
Start your day with an early breakfast at Malindi Retreat, then head out to Arabuko Sokoke Forest. This lush forest is a birdwatcher’s paradise and home to rare species of butterflies and elephants. Spend about three hours here, breathing in the fresh air and taking in the serene surroundings.
Next, venture to the Gede Ruins, just a short drive away. These ancient Swahili ruins date back to the 12th century and offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. Wander through the archaeological site, marvel at the remains of mosques, houses and a palace. Allocate around 1.5 hours to fully explore this historical treasure.
Day 2: Discover the Wonders of Mida Creek and Marine National Park
By low tide, make your way to Mida Creek. This stunning tidal inlet is perfect for a tranquil boat ride or a leisurely kayak. The mangroves and birdlife here are truly spectacular. Spend an a few hours or so enjoying the peaceful water and watching for wading birds and fish.
After Mida Creek, it’s time to dive into the vibrant underwater world at Marine National Park. Whether you are snorkeling or taking a glass-bottom boat tour, you will be amazed by the colorful coral reefs and marine life. Dedicate around two hours to this aquatic adventure.
Day 3: Marvel at Falconry Malindi and Hell’s Kitchen
After breakfast and a taste of the homemade pancakes head to Falconry Malindi where you will spend about an hour. Here, you can see birds of prey up close and even participate in a falconry demonstration. For lunch, stop by at Zarafa to refuel with some delicious pizzas!
Next, visit the dramatic sandstone gorges of Hell’s Kitchen in Marafa. These natural formations are a photographer’s dream, especially as the afternoon sun casts stunning shadows and highlights. Plan to spend around 2 hours exploring this unique landscape with the sundowner at the end – a majestic view!
Day 4: Unwind at Golden Beach and Sand Dunes
Spend your day at one of the beach bars and in the warm Indian Ocean. As the day winds down, make your way around 15.00 p.m. to the Golden Beach to relax and unwind. The soft sand dunes and golden hues of the beach offer the perfect backdrop for a peaceful evening. Enjoy a leisurely walk, take in the sunset, and perhaps have a sundowner as you reflect on your day.
